A Change in Plan
Chicago, Illinois
After a pivotal life transition, this full-floor residence overlooking Lincoln Park became the setting for a thoughtful new chapter. The client—a longtime collaborator of Jaffe Architecture —envisioned a serene, light-filled home that could showcase her art, host friends, and support a quieter, more introspective way of living. With sweeping lake and conservatory views, the apartment offered beauty and possibility. But its dated finishes and fragmented layout needed to be completely rethought.
Jaffe was involved before the purchase, offering insight into how the space could be transformed from the inside out. A full gut renovation followed, clearing the way for a plan defined by openness and flow. Instead of traditional walls, the design introduced a sculptural series of freestanding “cubes”—custom millwork volumes that house infrastructure, hide structural columns, and delineate space with subtlety and ease. Sliding doors and clear circulation paths support seamless transitions throughout.

Materials were selected for their softness, depth, and tactility. A curated palette of wood, stone, and metal
creates calm continuity, layered with quiet detail. From a lake-facing shower to a burnished brass pivot door
with etched Italian glass, each element is both precise and personal. Full-height doors, concealed cabinetry
hardware, and gentle shifts in ceiling height bring clarity to the home’s rhythm, distinguishing communal and
private zones without disruption.
Designed to evolve with the client, the home now offers flexibility and grounding—a contemporary city retreat
shaped by art, light, and intention.
