Ravine Reimagined

Highland Park, Illinois

Tucked above a wooded ravine in Highland Park, this custom home sits on a remarkable piece of North Shore land — secluded, sculptural, and rich with potential. A winding road reveals filtered views of Lake Michigan and a dramatic 25-foot slope, creating a sense of arrival that feels both cinematic and serene. After decades in a “temporary” house, the clients imagined a lasting retreat: modern, calm, and deeply connected to its surroundings—where comfort, nature, and aging in place could live in harmony. Our goal wasn’t just to make staying possible—it was to make staying wonderful.

Jaffe Architecture answered with a warm design that enhances rather than competes with the land. Natural materials and a muted palette let the landscape speak, while retaining walls and a carefully placed motor court carve out a gracious welcome. Large openings and a measured rhythm of materials frame long views and shifting light.

“Lisa and Rachel did an incredible job translating our vision into a home we love. Their attention to detail, from natural light to kitchen function and thoughtful storage, is something we never would have considered on our own. We had an idea of how we wanted to feel in our house, and they nailed it!”

Inspired by the asymmetry of nature, architectural details throughout reflect the ravine’s organic patterns. Window openings were composed in dialogue with the ravine, recalling the unplanned beauty of wild trees. Durable by nature, the materials were chosen to weather gracefully, gathering depth and patina over time.
